Sticky Information Diffusion and Inertial Behavior of Durables Consumption∗

چکیده
This paper studies the dynamics of durable and nondurable consumption under two alternative assumptions about information updating by households — rational inattention and sticky expectations. We find that sticky expectations due to a fixed cost does a better job of reproducing the infrequent adjustments at the individual level and the slow adjustments at the aggregate level. We then show that finite information-processing capacity can by itself lead to infrequent adjustments even if there is no adjustment cost. JEL Classification Numbers: C61, D81, E21.

Sticky Information Diffusion and the Inertial Behavior of Durables Consumption∗
This paper studies the dynamics of durable and nondurable consumption under two alternative assumptions about information updating by households – rational inattention and sticky expectations. We first show that the two types of sticky information diffusion can help generate strong excess smoothness in durables consumption. We then find that sticky expectations due to a fixed cost does a better...
متن کاملDEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS WORKING PAPER SERIES Intertemporal Substitution and Sectoral Comovement in a Sticky Price Model
Strong procyclical fluctuations in the durable production are the most prominent feature of the empirical response to monetary shocks. This paper investigates the role of preferences in matching this feature of the data in a two-sector sticky price model with flexibly priced durables. The reaction of durables depends crucially on whether preferences are separable between labor and aggregate con...

This paper studies the aggregate dynamics of durable and nondurable consumption under sticky information diffusion (SID) due to noisy observations and slow learning within the permanent income framework. We show that SID can significantly improve the model’s predictions on the joint behavior of income, durable, and nondurable consumption at the aggregate level. Specifically, we find that SID ca...
متن کاملDo Flexible Durable Goods Prices Undermine Sticky Price Models?
The “neoclassical synthesis” sticky price model exhibits strange behavior when augmented with markets for durable goods with flexible prices. While in the data the output of durable goods responds strongly and positively to a loosening of monetary policy, in dynamic general equilibrium models a monetary expansion causes the output of flexibly priced durables to contract. In an instructive speci...
